The opening ceremonies of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics was so incredible. I think the sliding box thing was my favorite… We started watching on regular TV – it’s addicting watching people do things that shouldn’t be possible. The commercials are killing me, but we’ve turned off DirecTV for the summer as we usually do, so no Tivo. We really do need Tivo to watch the Olympics. We might just turn the service back on early. It’s weird not being able to pause or rewind or play in slow mo.

Anyway, here are some of the bows I made during commercials.

I made the roses a while ago from instructions at JoAnn’s Fabrics. I didn’t know exactly what to do with them. I stuck them on a clip and tried to cover the seams with bows. They’re kind of cute, but might be on the heavy side, giving Zoe a sore head. We’ll see. As soon as she’s big enough for pony tails, I’m decking her with these.

These remind me of Mary Engelbreight’s fried egg flowers. I made the yo-yos then decided to make hair clips to match one of Zoe’s dresses. Nana ‘Nita gave it to her in May and she’s almost big enough to wear it. It has different colored hearts all over it. You’ll see. Note the “z’s” I made in the buttons. Hee hee.

I like this ribbon a lot. It’s blue on one side and green on the other. I should have redone the one on the left. When you get that nagging feeling that something isn’t right, listen! It will bug you forever if you don’t. Can’t fix it now.

I usually take my own advice, but I didn’t listen this time for some reason. Might have been checking out Michael Phelps’s yummies. Holy cow did you see how many of his muscle groups are defined? Josh wanted to see the USA win the 400m relay and when they did, MP did some pretty intense yelling which flexed muscles that I didn’t know existed. I have never been into big muscles like Awnowld as Mr. Universe, but I’ve decided that I’m totally into swimmer muscles… as long as their calves are also developed. Gosh, what a tangent I’m on… I only wanted to post to wake up from the computer work I’m doing.

I actually had ribbon to match this cute dress. The ribbon might be a little lighter or more yellow, but when worn together you can’t even tell.

See?

Before I get back to work, I just have to say that Japan had no chance—NONE—against USA’s Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. They are the Queens of the Beach and have been kicking sand vball butt for a long time. I love how opposing teams always serve Misty, as if she were the weaker player, but she rocks with her smart placement of the ball and she can hit. Kerri is a wall at the net with her blocking and the frustration the other team must feel going up against her is clear. May and Walsh are the dream team. I like that they use each other’s strengths and know that they can afford to be humble. It’s easy to cheer for our country when represented by these two great ball players.

Sarah and Josh watched a program on TV about a man who learned Icelandic in less than a week. I caught glimpses of the program watching him do large calculations in his head that scientists checked (and found correct) with a calculator. That’s all I remember about the program because I didn’t sit and watch the whole thing with them.

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking for a book in the autobiography section of the library and found Born on A Blue Day. I thought it was an intriguing title for a book, so I checked it out. I found it funny that as a child the author, Daniel Tammet, would scan the shelves at the library looking for his name on a book. He learned later that in order to find his name on a book in the library, he would have to write it.

Before I could read very far into it, I got excited and told Sarah that she needed to read the book. His prose is very easy to understand, so I thought she could easily follow it. I couldn’t wait, so I read the first chapter out loud to her. She said, “Oh, it’s like that guy on TV.” I flipped to the back cover of the book and she saw a picture of Daniel Tammet and yelled, “That’s him!” We laughed! Of course, there can only be one Daniel Tammet. Up until then I had been looking at the picture wondering why he looked so familiar.

He is an inspiration. He is able to give scientists new insight into the world of autistm because he can tell them exactly how and what he is feeling and seeing in his mind. Numbers are like beautiful landscapes in his mind. He successfully memorized over 22,500 numbers of pi (a record) and the scientists asked him to look at a page of the numbers of pi while he was hooked up to a galvanic meter. They messed with him when they purposely substituted sixes for nines and were fascinated when they saw a physiological response. He described it as having his numerical landscapes vandalized.

One of my favorite parts of the book is when Daniel got to meet Kim Peek. He’s the man that Dustin Hoffman spent time with while shooting the movie Rain Man in order to become the character Raymond Babbit. HIs having an instant connection with someone was heart warming.

Reading Daniel’s book confirmed to me the things I learned from a friend about her son who also has Asperger’s syndrome. Not all with autism are like Raymon Babbitt in Rain Man. There are high functioning autistics with invisible disabilities like Daniel and my friend’s son. The need for a set daily routine, literal use of language, and finding comfort in counting are eye-opening nuggets of information that lead to understanding and acceptance.

I highly recommend this book! The program Sarah and Josh watched on the Discovery Channel was filmed in 2005 and is called Brainman, according to the book. If you can find it, I recommend that, too.

OK, so I’ve been mentally gathering material for blogs and now it’s all coming out since I’ve finished my last calendar for the month… doesn’t mean I don’t have other things to do, it’s just that none of it is due today. Oh, and baby happens to be asleep. I don’t think I’ve ever posted more than two times in one day. Just consider your coupon tripled.

Josh and I watched the pilot for the new Knight Rider series last week sometime. I used to watch this every week back when David Hasselhoff was hot. Only we didn’t say he was hot. We probably said he was “bitchen” or something totally 80′s. I was 12 when it came out and could recognize the predictability of it… I was mature enough to know that a talking car that always wins would get old someday. My brother, Robert, was 8 (my Zack’s age) and he loved Knight Rider more than air. I bet him $5 that by the time he was 16 he wouldn’t love Knight Rider anymore, but he ruffled with indignation at the thought that such a thing could ever occur and declared “I will always love Knight Rider!” Of course, he turned 16, lost interest in KITT and Michael Knight, conveniently forgot the bet and I never got my $5.

So naturally, when I heard the theme music start on the new and improved Knight Rider, I thought of my brother. I liked that they didn’t change the theme music, but only updated it a little. I also like that it’s a continuation of the original show with lots of references to “25 years ago”. And it really was 25 years ago when this show first aired… and I never thought I would reach a point where 25 years would fit in my life span. I can actually say, “I was there 25 years ago!” It doesn’t make me feel old, it makes me feel accomplished! I’ve reached a milestone.

The new driver, Justin Bruening, is kinda hot… I could watch this show to see him in action–even though the predictability is still there. I really like the voice of KITT. And I like the new mustang diggs they’ve made KITT into. Mustangs rule Trans Ams any day. I thought the love interest was kind of eyeliddy… you know what I mean? She’s like Clay Aiken with the slow blinking in her acting. It’s kind of irritating.

Are there any Knight Rider fans out there? Anybody see the new Knight Rider and want to comment?
