One reem of paper later, I am done with 2006 Taxes! Yes! Got help from my favorite tax guy, Josh’s Dad, and then enlisted help from a CPA (a friend’s husband who likes saving other people money just because he’s a nice guy). He told me about the Sales Tax Deduction (Publication 600) which applies to Schedule A, Line 5. It made our refund go up $150. Way cool. And it gets better! Since I have to ammend our 2005 return for not claiming the property taxes we paid (new homeowners still wet behind the ears), I claimed the sales tax deduction and it made our refund go up $173… so it’s Christmas in March, baby. (I really gotta send out our Christmas cards soon… thanks for reminding me.) In as early as 9 days we may see a jump in the bank account thanks to direct deposit and electronic filing. [Insert nacho dance here.]
So now I have a stack of paper that’s useless — headed for the shredder, and another that needs signatures. We’ll be sending the amended return via usps because they don’t do electronic filing for amended returns. And then the rest are copies to sign and store.
Gotta go – got a game tonight! Now I can happily pound volleyballs with a clear consience, knowing I am an upstanding member of society. I pay my taxes!
And they pay me back.
